Emyr graduated from the University of Liverpool in Biochemistry and Medicine. He spent one year lecturing in Anatomy at the University before completing both the Basic Surgical and the Higher Surgical training rotations within the Mersey Deanery. He spent his first year as a Consultant in North Wales before coming to Peterborough with his family in 2008.
Emyr’s area of surgical interest is Hip and Knee arthroplasty (i.e. Joint replacement) and Knee arthroscopy (Key hole surgery). In particular, Emyr is referred patients with complex problems requiring complex primary joint replacement of the hip and knee as well as revision joint surgery for failed hip and knee joint replacement’s. Through his experience and training, Emyr will provide alternative, harder bearings in hip replacement under the appropriate clinical conditions. Therefore, as well as hip resurfacing, Emyr also provides ceramic bearing prostheses for his younger patients. For the younger patients with knee arthritis, Emyr will provide Patello-femoral joint and Unicompartmental knee joint replacements under the appropriate clinical conditions. This is complemented by his experience in knee arthroscopy, and he is able to provide “key hole surgery” for his patients that do not require knee joint replacement
Emyr gained his specialist surgical training in Hip and Knee joint replacement after fellowship training in the U.K and the USA. The use of bone grafting techniques for bone deficiency and cemented techniques for joint replacement and revision joint surgery were achieved at the Hip Centre, Wrightington. The use of uncemented implants for joint replacement, joint revision and dealing with bone loss, was gained on a De Puy arthroplasty fellowship at Northampton Hospital. Minimal invasive techniques, uncemented techniques for revision joint surgery were experienced as a visiting fellow to the Mayo Clinic, USA.
Emyr is published in major arthroplasty journals and his research interest in the biomechanics of knee arthroplasty was rewarded with a Master of Philosophy degree at the University of Salford.
He is a member of The British Hip Society (BHS), British Association of Surgeons of the Knee (BASK) and of The Peterborough & Stamford Orthopaedics (PASO), with his NHS colleagues.
